United 93 opened this weekend. Still not too sure how I feel about it. I heard the producers got permission from all of the victims’
family to do the movie. I’m glad they
did that. I saw one of the movie promos
that had interviews of some of the family members and they all mentioned that
it wasn’t too soon after 9/11 to show the movie. Mostly because they felt people had forgotten the horrors of that
day. And that the movie would also
serve as another way to honor the lives of their loved ones.
Have people really forgotten? I still remember when I first heard about it and thinking that
some prop plane had hit one of the towers.
Then seeing people at working grabbing their things and rushing out the
door. Being told to look out the window
to see the Pentagon in smoke. Getting
back to my office and conversing with co-workers when we felt the earth
shake. (We thought the State Department
had just been hit by a car bomb, which we later found out was a military jet
breaching the sound barrier.) Feeling
helpless because we thought Metro had closed down but only to feel relief
because one co-worker filled his car with people to take home. After dropping one co-worker at his house to
then see the TV coverage of the towers falling. Getting home to see the worry look lifted from my parents face
since I couldn’t call them cuz the cell towers were oversubscribed. Being able to call Chewy in Denver to let
her know I was ok. Feeling anger and being
clueless for days trying to wrestle with why all this was happening.
I haven’t forgotten.
Nor will I ever. I don’t think I’ll
go see the movie but I hope it does well.
