The first thing “I” think of when I hear ‘Washington, D.C.’ is …
Yep, DC is getting a “state” quarter. As stupid as it sounds because DC is a city not a state it’s nonetheless a reality. With that, Mayor Fenty is having a design contest. Being a native Washingtonian, it made me think “What would I want to represent Washington, D.C.?” Here’s my list in no particular order:
- A crack pipe – Gotta represent our “Mayor-For-Life” Marion Berry
- A chalk outline
- A car on cinder blocks with a smashed in window
- A man with his arms raised while another points a gun at them
- The words: “Not a State” – only to drill it into the minds of the people
Yes, I agree that the above is a pretty dismal viewpoint of our capitol city yet, I work downtown and we attend church in D.C. That’s six of the seven weekdays that I personally am in the city. Yet, even with all the positive changes the city is going through post-Berry administration (You have to agree that Mayor Williams and Mayor Fenty did a lot to improve the city especially with the hiring of Chancellor Rhee by Fenty.) these are my first impressions. Not the cherry blossoms or the National Monuments or Federal Government buildings but just all the negatives.
Speaking with our pastor last night I asked him how the Associate Pastor search process has been going. He seemed optimistic in some sense because of the new opportunities and resources at hand. However, he did mentioned that when he spoke with other pastors their major concerns about shepherding a church located in DC was about the cost of living, high crime, high KDM rate, and poor public education. That made me think – Who really wants to work in DC then? Just those who want to be government workers or lobbyists.
I really have no answer to this. Only the prayer that God sends someone to help shepherd our church with our Senior Pastor.
